Based on the comic book “Here” by Richard McGuire
Plot
A generational story of love, loss, laughter, and families sharing life and the special place they live in.. It was first published as a strip in the comic magazine “Raw” in 1989 and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. At one point in the film, Richard’s father names several towns that he says are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Clarinet Concerto, excerpts
In reality, they are all towns along Interstate 80 in PA, which had not yet been built.. [From the trailer] Richard: You know, if you want, you can spend the rest of the night here. Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here, they’re from Stooges to Congas (1943).
But after watching it, I was disappointed with the movie
1 and 2 written by Artie Shaw I was really looking forward to seeing this movie at the AFI Film Festival last night. Robert Zemeckis, famous for “Back to the Future,” loves to use technology to illustrate his films. Here, he uses multiple picture-in-picture panel inserts to show what’s happening in the same place at different times (e.g., “here,” somewhere in New England or Pennsylvania).
Been there before, done that before
He also uses dehydration techniques to turn Tom Hanks and Robin Wright into teenagers (much better done than Scorsese’s “The Irishman”). However, this plus doesn’t make up for a mediocre and predictable story that focuses on Tom Hanks’ (and Robin Wright’s) initially enthusiastic teenagers who are ruined by the realities of adult life. The parallel stories of Benjamin Franklin’s son, a Native American, an early pilot, the alleged inventor of the Las-E-Boy, and a black family who occupy the same space at different times ultimately become more of a distraction than an improvement.

The use of AI to create ancient times and animals, as well as the artificial use of panels, ultimately become tiresome. The main actors (Hanks, Wright, Bettany, and Reilly) are all excellent, but I wish they had a better script to work with.
